Louisiana Sea Grant Communications Receives APEX Award

Pirate Poster Sea GrantLouisiana Sea Grant’s communications office won a 2013 APEX Award of Excellence for its “How Safe is Your Booty?” poster. The Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) are sponsored by Communications Concepts Inc., which helps promote the best practices and strategies for business communications.

LSG won its award in the Posters and Displays Category. The pirate-themed poster was created to serve as an eye-catching and entertaining reminder to students and residents, especially in low lying areas of coastal Louisiana, to make sure their homes are raised above the base flood elevation. Louisiana loses a football field of land every hour due to coastal erosion, land subsidence and other factors. The changing coastline brings with it a host of challenges, not least of which is the threat posed to homes and businesses by flooding.

The 2013 APEX Awards featured 2,400 entries in 12 major categories and 138 subcategories. The awards recognize outstanding performance in area including graphic design, editorial content and success in communications excellence. This year, 100 Grand Awards were given out in the major categories with 971 Awards of Excellence recognizing exceptional entries.

Since its establishment in 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant (www.laseagrant.org) has worked to promote stewardship of the state’s coastal resources through a combination of research, education and outreach programs critical to the cultural, economic and environmental health of Louisiana’s coastal zone. Louisiana Sea Grant, based at Louisiana State University, is part of the National Sea Grant College Program, a network of 33 university-based programs in each of the U.S. coastal and Great Lakes states and Puerto Rico.
